The East Chicago Public Library will be hosting a dedication ceremony and a reception honoring retired Lake County Judge Lorenzo Arredondo on Thursday, May 17, 2012 at the Main Library located at 2401 E. Columbus Drive. An official ribbon cutting to dedicate the Judge Lorenzo Arredondo Study Room will be held at 5:30 p.m.
The Honorable Judge Lorenzo Arredondo recently donated his collection of legal documents, honors and achievements which will be available to the public and academic community for research purposes. His collection will be housed in the study room, located in the Main Library.
Judge Lorenzo Arredondo is an East Chicago native and was elected and served as a judge of the Lake County Court (1977-1980). He was then elected and served as judge of the Lake Circuit Court (1981-2011). Judge Arredondo is the longest serving Latino elected state trial court judge in the United States of America.
An alumnus of East Chicago Washington High School, Judge Arredondo graduated from Indiana University (B.A. 1965) (M.S. 1967) and University of San Francisco School of Law (J.D. 1972).
Currently, Judge Arredondo is the Chairperson of the Judge Lorenzo Arredondo Justice Center. The Justice Center provides educational tours to local schools and groups engaging attendees in activities that teach civic responsibility. “Whenever we have the opportunity to honor one of our own, we should do so,” said Charles Moore, Interim Director. “Judge Arredondo has brought honor and respect to the citizens of East Chicago. He is a living legend.”
